In a completely predictable chain of events a small silicon valley startup has accomplished something Microsoft has been working on for years. This small team has created an instant messaging, calling, and video chat service for consumers and businesses which works reliably. While Microsoft has been struggling for almost 10 years to turn Skype into a reliable messaging service this small company has achieved what many believed could be done.
Microsoft has a long history with different messaging services. They built Lync for businesses, which was a strange hybrid of instant messaging and email-like conversations. Then it was rebranded Skype For Business with no change to the strange behavior.
When Skype was acquired in 2011 Microsoft took years to transfer the technology from P2P to a cloud based messaging service. Then they released several different user clients built on a huge range of different technologies. Finally the rallied around using React Native, a technology no teams at Microsoft had expertise in, to build the next version of all of their clients.
